We have ended our chess season of 2001 with the Glenmore Chess Champs and our champions are Brendan Buck (J.P.) and Andile Ngidi and Chase Nymphe (S.P.)

Our players have done exceptionally well this year with the following children making the Durban and District team in their respective age groups: Christian Chetty, Reece Nymphe, Wesley Ward, Ayanda Ngidi and Andile Ngidi, with Brendan Buck and Rory Bosch being selected as reserves. These children and others from Glenmore attended the KwaZulu Natal Chess Trials in July. We are very proud of Christian Chetty, Wesley Ward, Reece Nymphe, Rory Bosch, Ayanda Ngidi, Andile Ngidi and Chase Nymphe who were selected to represent KwaZulu Natal at the South African Chess Championships which are to be held in December in Durban this year. We wish them the best of luck.

Our teams have been very successful with the J.P. team winning the Virginia tournament, the Mardi Gras and the Durban central league, and coming 2nd in the D&D league finals.

The S.P. team came 2nd in the A section of the Virginia tournament, won the trophy at the Mardi Gras..."Quest for the Olympics" tournament, came 2nd at the Clifton tournament, 3rd at the leisure - time tournament, 2nd in the Durban Central league and 2nd in the D&D Chess Challenge Finals.

Several children have done well in the various individual tournaments and we would like to congratulate all of them.

Many children enjoy the tournaments where they sit quietly playing chess and then in between rounds play soccer, meet up with old friends, spend money at the tuck shop and expend their pent up energy outside. Many many thanks to the parents who wake up early on weekends and help with lifting and generally offer their help and support. A big thanks goes to all the children, who show up at practices each week and play with enthusiasm and enjoyment. Well done to each and every one of you.

We also say a very big thank you to Mrs. Diedericks for her help and patience throughout the year.

Mrs. S. Murrell (Chess Coach)

JUNIOR PRIMARY CHESS TOURNAMENT

HOSTED BY GLENMORE PRIMARY

Chess with Mrs Murrell.gif (112896 bytes)

On the 24th of August a spectacular J.P. Chess Tournament was held at Glenmore. There were 126 grade 1-3 children from schools all over Durban who took part. The planned number of rounds to be played was 7, but because of a computer problem after the 2nd round, the team running the tournament had to switch to manual scoring and only five rounds were played.

The results were: A tie for 3rd place between 13 children of which there were 3 Glenmore pupils. All of these children received R10 each. Seven children tied for 2nd place of which there was one Glenmore child. All of these children received R25 each. There were 4 children who tied for 1st place. One of these winners was Cameron Louw of Glenmore Primary. Each of these winners received R30.
