The Spy by Wesley Ward

As a knight you have weapons, armour and a horse. Without these a knight wouldn't be able to go on a mission, right? But as a child, a peasant child, who had learned absolutely nothing about knighthood I did just that, I did the impossible!

It was January 23, 1506. I was helping my dad harvest the crops, when suddenly (with my special talent of extra-ordinary hearing) I heard the baron talking to his knights. He told them that the queen had been captured ten minutes earlier.

I knew that if the kidnappers were only ten minutes away from the main castle, that I should be able to hear them, but only faintly. I listened as well as I could and tried to pick up every word, this is what I heard, "We ...take her...Reims...safest city...England." I knew that knights would take too long to find the queen. I knew what I had to do.

I asked my dad if I could have tomorrow off if I worked extra hard, and he said yes! The next day I woke up at 1:00a.m. and crept out with my horse. I rode for about two hours. Luckily for me last harvest my dad's crops grew very well and my dad paid a nobleman to teach me how to ride a horse. Anyway back to the story. Eventually I got to Reims. Now the hard part was getting in. I thought and thought and then I decided to create a diversion. So I waited for a knight to come to the drawbridge. Once it was down my plan went into action.

After tying the horse to a tree I shouted to the knight, "Hey you." He turned around and searched for me. Meanwhile I crept into the castle. I looked around for a hiding place and hid. I then listened for the queen to have a feint idea where she was. I looked for an entrance into the castle. I entered the castle listening for any people, to avoid being seen. I crept down to the dungeon and then I knew exactly where she was!

I waited till the guard turned around then I knocked him out and took his keys. I unlocked the queen's cell door. She was surprised that I had managed to free her. I told her that I'd answer all her questions later, but for then, I told her to follow me and be quiet. We crept silently up the stairs to ground level and hid at my old hiding place.

We waited for a knight to go out and then we crept silently behind him, but when we were almost across the drawbridge it started to close! We ran and jumped just in time and made it across. We ran to the horse and rode to the king's castle. On the way she kept talking to me. "Who are you?" she asked. "I am a peasant with extra-ordinary hearing, Your Highness, and I heard our baron talking of your capture." I answered. "But how did you know where I was?" asked the queen. "I heard the kidnappers discussing where to put you."

When we arrived, there was a great cheer. Crowds packed up on both sides of us as we made our way to the castle. The King said that I could train to be a knight. We all lived happily ever after!

Report on our outing to the Botanic Gardens by Lihle Radebe

On Tuesday the 15th of May the grade 5's went to the Durban Botanic Gardens. We travelled by bus. We left school at about 08:30 and came back at 13:00. The travelling time was about 15 to 20 minutes. When we got there we were split up into 3 groups of 20. The tour guides were Ron, Marie and another. We were told lots of information such as Baobab trees live for 2000 years...Papyrus is where the word paper comes from. Papyrus is like a long thin reed with a fluffy part at the top. They would cut off the top part and press the reed down in a special way. We learnt that sugar cane came from India. The oldest living tree in the garden is the cycad which lives for 5000 years. When we finished touring we could eat. We sat in circles and we had to sit on wet grass. I sat in a group with 7 people. After we finished we did some sketching. I did a sketch of a Baobab tree. The tour was very good.
