Dear Parents,
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the many families and friends of our children who turned out to help at the working weekend recently. Despite the threat of torrential rain a huge number of volunteers presented themselves for duty. We accomplished far more that we intended because children and adults alike rolled up their sleeves and got on with the job in hand! Everybody who turned out agreed that we enjoyed the day tremendously and many people have approached the PTA to ask when the next one is. Once again many, many thanks to all of you.
Polling Day Inset Day
I have to inform you that the school will now not be used as a polling station and therefore will not be closed on Thursday 10th June and that the INSET day Friday 11th June will go ahead as planned.
I find myself in a very difficult situation due to this unforeseen cancellation. I cannot believe that more research into suitable polling stations was not carried out before we were informed that we had to be available and had no choice in the matter. A copy of the letter which we received from the Principal Electoral Officer will be posted on the school noticeboards for your information and should you feel it necessary to register your complaints to the Council that would be in order. We have had to cancel and reschedule many planned activities as a result and have been inconvenienced considerably. I can only apologise for any inconvenience and would assure you that our dissatisfaction was voiced most strongly by our Chair of Governors, Mr Don Merritt. Any private arrangements you may have made will be authorised by the school.
Health
Several of the children throughout the school have recently been suffering from itchy red rashes. The advice from various GPs has been different. I suggest that you seek advice from your own GP should your child become unwell as one of the local GPs has informed us that treatment with antibiotics is necessary to prevent further illness.
I must remind you that should your child suffer from diarrohea or sickness that they must be kept at home for 48 hours to prevent the infection spreading throughout their class.
We have recently been blessed with some lovely sunny weather and we would now encourage the children to make sure that they are all wearing a school sun hat, and have a school issue water bottle. Also if you would like to send in suitable sun cream the teachers will remind the children to administer it. Please make sure the sun cream container has the child's name on it as they are not allowed to use sun cream belonging to another child in case of allergic reaction.
Production
A reminder to the parents and carers in year five: THERE WILL BE NO PRODUCTION PRACTICES NEXT WEEK as the children from year six and some of the staff will be on school journey for the whole week.
After half term please remember that PRODUCTION PRACTICES WILL BE ON MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS from 3.30-5.30pm.
The production will take place on Wednesday 14th, Thursday 15th and Friday 16th July and tickets will be on sale from the school office from Monday 14th June, price £3.50. For the first week the tickets will only be available to the families of children in years five and six. From Monday 21st June tickets will be available for all.
School Journey
Year six will be travelling to Cornwall for their annual school journey, they will be away from Saturday 22nd May to Friday 28th May. Accompanying staff are as follows: Mrs Martin, Miss Philip, Miss Cronin, Mrs Brown and Mr Purves. I will be in daily contact with the school by telephone, e mail and fax. Should any difficulties arise please see one of the members of the senior management team. Miss Philip and Mrs Brown's duties will be covered either internally or by supply staff known to the school.
Open Day
We have planned an Open Day for Friday 25th June. We have successfully held this event in the past and invite you to visit the school on that day to see the many displays and activities which the children have been working hard on. To allow for staff members to prepare for the event school will be closed at 1.30pm and we would like all the children to return to school at 4.00pm to take part in planned displays and activities. We expect the Open Day to finish at approximately 6.00pm. More details will follow after half-term but please put this date in your diary.
Copthall Sports Day
The annual Barnet sports event will take place at Copthall Stadium on 1st July. Children from years 3-6 will be representing the school should they be selected in pre-competition trials. If your child is going to take part in this event you will receive a letter containing more details nearer the event.
Multicultural Week
You will no doubt remember last year's tremendously enjoyable multi-cultural week. Following its success we have planned another for week of 14th June. A detailed letter will be sent to you at the end of next week to inform you of the many exciting events and visiting companies which Miss Brazier has organised to educate and entertain the children throughout the whole week.
Summer Fayre
The annual PTA summer fayre is planned for Saturday 19th June, 12-4pm. This is always popular with adults and children alike and is one of our biggest fund raisers of the year. You will be hearing more details via the PTA newsletters and we very much look forward to seeing you on that day.
Sports Day
Sports day has been booked for Tuesday 29th June, weather permitting. If it is not possible to hold it on this day we have arranged for a reserve day of Wednesday 30th June. Events will take place for Year One and Year Two in the morning, starting at 10.30am and for Years Three to Six in the afternoon starting 2.00pm. You are welcome to come and cheer on your children.
Foundation Activity Day
The children in the nursery and reception will be having their activity day Wednesday 7th July, this is not a competitive event and will part of their normal day. More information will be available from the class teachers.
Friday Football
We have decided to extend the football club for KS1 on Fridays to the reception class for the final half term. Any parents who wish their children to join Nikki Barnes' football club should fill in the appropriate letter, to be sent out next week and return it to the school office.
ICT Installation
I am pleased to inform you that the new ICT installations in Foundation, KS1 and KS2 classes and the computer suite will begin after half term. This is a very exciting time for the school and my sincere thanks to everybody for all their hard work raising funds to enable St. John's to have the most up-to-date ICT equipment. Equipment will include new PCs for the classrooms, new mobile suite of laptops, a new server, new Internet connections, new interactive whiteboards in YR, Y1 and Y2, new laptops to run all of the new whiteboards and an exciting range of new software. We hope to have the whole system up and running in time for Open Day where you will be able to see much of it in operation.
Clubs
Please note that there will be NO CLUBS during the first week after half-term. You will be notified of the clubs that will be taking place during that week. However, there will be a slight change to the chess club as after half-term it will be for beginners only. If you wish your child to attend please see Mrs Walsh in the office. This club takes place on a Tuesday, 3.35-4.30pm, and all beginners are welcome.
Dinner Money
The dinner money for next half-term is £52.80. This can either be paid weekly (£8.00) or in full (cheques made payable to St. John's School). Can you please ensure that dinner money is paid regularly so that large bills do not accrue as this not only causes confusion regarding outstanding amounts but increased administration for the school office. Many thanks for your assistance in this matter.
