ST. JOHN'S CE PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER NO. 1 - AUTUMN 2005
Dear Parents, I hope you have all had a well-deserved summer break and on behalf of the staff I would like to extend a warm welcome back to all of you. School Uniform The children have come back to school looking fantastically smart, thank you for all your efforts in this. Please remember to name everything, as children are very good at hanging their clothes up on the floor and in the playground jumpers make excellent goalposts! Last term we sent bags of unnamed uniform to the charity shop, much of it looked brand new. Central Heating Throughout the summer holidays we have had builders on site and the installation of our new gas supply, boilers and heaters is all but complete. These long awaited works will make a tremendous difference to the warmth and comfort in the building and should also make the running of the central heating much more efficient and cost effective. Now that this work is almost completed the new fencing has been ordered and will be installed later this term. Many thanks to you for patiently putting up with the disruption in Swan Lane while the building work is in progress. Could I ask you to take extra special care when parking and dropping off your children and remind you not to use the entrance to the staff car park for parking or reversing, as this is extremely dangerous. Maintenance Fund The maintenance fund for this year is £36 per child and may be pain annually or termly. Please could you send in your contributions to the school office as soon as possible in a marked envelope. It is thanks to our being part of this scheme that we were able to have the central heating work done at no cost to the school! Correspondence Please could you notify us if you are having problems receiving e-mails from the school or if your e-mail address has changed. We save an enormous amount of time and money by communicating with you in this way and would like to extend the number of parents on our email list if possible. So if you have recently bought a computer and are able to receive correspondence electronically, or if you are able to receive e-mails at your place of work please let Mrs Walsh know as soon as possible. My Big Fat Greek Party You have probably seen the flyers and posters for this coming event; tickets are selling fast so if you have not already done so ask your class rep for tickets. Every year this event is a fantastic success and the star prize for the 'special event raffle' is once again amazing - a weekend away for 2 worth in excess of £500! PE From this term children for YR, Y1 and Y2 will be having 1 outdoor PE lesson per week as the junior children do. I would be grateful if you could provide for them a school tracksuit for this activity when the weather turns colder. These will be available from the school office in about 2 weeks time priced £12.50. They will also need a pair of old or cheap trainers, which they can keep in their PE bag at school as the grass is too slippery for plimsolls; this will prevent them having to ruin expensive/fashion shoes and stop them from comparing and competing with each other about who has the best ones or the ones that have the brightest flash! Children from all classes who take part in PE sessions both in and after school will no longer need to bring in extra kit from home on these days as they will all be able to wear the same school kit. I hope you agree that this will be much simpler for everyone as it will
Before and After School Please could you make sure that all children from YR upwards do not play on the equipment before or after school as there is no staff supervision at these times and accidents can easily happen if children play unsupervised. Younger siblings may play on the equipment if supervised by a parent or other responsible adult. I would be grateful for your support in this and ask that you remind any children you see on the equipment that it is unsafe and therefore not allowed. We would also ask that children from Y 1 upwards go into school without their parents. This will help them become independent and will alleviate the overcrowding on the path along the side of the school by the field and in the cloakroom areas. Thank you for your support in this. Dinner money The cost of a school meal has increased and for this term the amount will be £64.75. (£1.85 per day). It would help Mrs Walsh if all monies could be sent into school on Mondays only and in a clearly marked envelope. Unfortunately this increase came about in April but the school received no communication from the LEA. We have been billed for the increase and will have to ask parents to pay the backdated money, which will be in the region of £10; more details will be sent out individually in the next few weeks. I apologise on the Borough's behalf; please come and see Mrs Walsh if this causes any problems. Absence You may remember that last year after a visit from the Educational Welfare Officer parents were asked to keep requests for holiday leave during term time to an absolute minimum. At that time, due to your supportive response, our official absence rate was dramatically decreased. There has however been a recent increase in holiday requests and our absence numbers are once again creeping upwards. I would urge you to make every effort to keep to the official holiday dates so as to minimise the disruption to the children's learning. Working Weekend We are about to start on the long awaited stage in the new junior play area now that the building work is almost finished. We invite you to come along to our next Working Weekend on Saturday 1st October at 10 o'clock to get the project underway. All those who have helped at our previous weekend events have really enjoyed the day, the atmosphere is great, the children have a fantastic day and the school's recourses and environment are hugely enhanced thanks to the efforts of the whole school community. If you haven't joined in before, look out for the children's posters and fliers and put your name on their lists when they approach you in the playground with their clipboards! We hope to make a start on the stage, repaint the furniture and the fencing, decorate one of the classrooms, complete some general gardening and tidying on the site and maybe other jobs too if we have enough volunteers. So whatever you ca
Farmer's Choice The organic delivery scheme will be starting up again next week. Please look out for the stall in the playground every Wednesday at 3.30 and hand in your order. For parents new to the school please see Miss D'Aristou for details. We could do with some extra people to man the stall. If you think you would be available to help for two or three hours a term please see Mrs Branch who is a Y1 parent. I hope that the children have a really exciting and fun term this term and as ever I thank you all for your continuing support, JANE MARTIN | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
