ST. JOHN'S CE PRIMARY SCHOOL SUMMER NEWSLETTER NO. 1 Dear Parents,
Y6 School Journey Y6 children will be departing for Cornwall on Saturday 21st May and returning on Friday 27th May. Accompanying staff will be as follows: Mr Steve Llewellyn, Mr David Martin, Miss Donna Latimer, Mr Terry Purvis and myself. Mrs Fry will be deputising in my absence. Any urgent matters can be forwarded to me via Mrs Fry or via Mrs Walsh in the school office. Healthy Living Week This will take place from Tuesday 7th June to Friday 10th June. Ms D'Aristou assisted by Miss Skinner has worked tremendously hard to arrange a fun packed and stimulating week for the children which will include many activities designed to promote emotional, social and physical well being. Activities include healthy cooking lessons, tai chi, aerobics, music and movement, circuit training, dancing, team buliding, circle time, making and sharing healthy drinks and snacks, thinking positively, self esteem building and teamwork. On Thursday 9th please could you send in with your child a healthy snack to share, something unusual would be nice, eg. exotic, tropical fruit. On Tuesday 7th June there will be a free cooking/nutrition seminar held by a chef/teacher who will be discussing elements of healthy eating for your children. She will also be showing you how to make quick and easy healthy snacks. This will be an opportunity for you to broaden your own knowledge and understanding of nutritional and dietary requirements and get some fantastic menu ideas for you and your family. Space will be limited so we ask that you return the slip at the bottom of this newsletter to Ms D'Aristou or Miss Skinner as soon as possible if you wish to attend. No more than one place will be allocated per family. The week promises to be a great success, I am sure the children will enjoy it tremendously. Farmers Choice On Wednesday 8th June there will be a launch of this new project in the school playground at 3.15pm. The project will provide the opportunity for staff and parents to purchase bags of locally grown organic fruit and vegetables for a reasonable price. Please refer to the flyer given out this week for details. Non-School Uniform Days The PTA have been working very hard to get ready for the annual Summer Fete which will take place on Saturday 18th June. Just a quick reminder that this Friday 20th May is a non-uniform day in return for the children from YN all the way through to Y6 bringing in an "alcoholic bottle" for the bottle tombola. Also please put in your diary Friday 17th June, this is also a non-uniform day in return for the children from YN through to Y2 to bring in cakes and Y3 through to Y6 a new toy. I know we always rely heavily on your generosity to raise money for the children's resources but I am sure you will agree that in return your children enjoy a fantastic standard of facilities here at St. John's. PTA NEWS Here is an update on what your money has recently provided for the children and details of items that are on order for delivery in the next few weeks:
The support you give financially to the school is not only extremely generous but is so vitally important to the continuation of the very high level of resourcing that your children enjoy here at St. John's. Please continue to dig deep! In addition to the above we have plans to spend a further £12,500 on new play facilities. The PTA and playground committee have already begun work on the plans for a stage, seating, a low climbing wall, a shaded "Quiet Area" which will all be able to be installed once the fencing is in place. New Fencing We hope to complete work on the perimeter fencing next half-term, this will include fencing along the school field, between the junior playground and The Mount, between the junior playground and the car park and around the grassed area outside the DT/Art room. We are reliant on external funding for this project so as yet do not have an exact date for the work, hopefully it will be completed this term. Once it is complete we will be able to forge ahead with the new play facilities, plans for which are well under way. All for Sport A new course of lessons begins on Friday 10th June, 3.35pm-4.30pm cost £18.00 for six weeks (payable half-termly in advance). These lessons will be open to Reception class also for this final half term of the year. Picking up at 3.35pm We have an increasing number of children who are persistently collected late, sometimes not until 4.00pm. As you know, lots of staff are involved in after school clubs or meetings at this time of day and whilst we are happy to look after children in an emergency situation we are unable to provide after school care for parents who are continually late. After half-term parents will be required to sign a "Late Collection Book" which will be referred to by the Pupil Welfare Committee of the Governors. Dinner Money The dinner money for this half term is £56.10 or £8.50 weekly. Cheques made payable to St. John's School. Please can you ensure that dinner is paid promptly at the beginning of the half term or at the beginning of each week as this saves a huge amount of administration work for Mrs Walsh in the office. Chess Club Chess Club will continue on Tuesdays next half term (3.35pm-4.30pm) but it will only be for beginners. If your child wishes to learn chess then please give their name to Mrs Walsh in the school office. JANE MARTIN -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I would like to attend the healthy eating seminar taking place on Tuesday 7th June at 2.30pm-3.15pm.
