Notes:
TERMLY FORECAST
SUMMER 2004
Dear Parents,
I hope this breakdown of the work we will be covering
this term will be helpful.
LANGUAGE AND LITERACY
During our daily literacy sessions the children are
thoroughly enjoying the shared reading of our many Big
Books, which are both colourful and stimulating and
they are learning to read lots of new words by sight.
During this term we will revise all the letter sounds
which we have covered already, as well as learning some
basic blends - e.g. ch.sh,th. The children will continue
to work on word building and may be encouraged to write
independently. They will continue to bring home reading
books which they can share with you at home. Thank you
for supporting your child's reading at home, it is a
tremendous help. Please remember to note down your comments
weekly in the reading diary. If not already they will
soon be bringing home a word bank with words to match
into the folder. I will send home instructions to help
you to use it in the most helpful way.
MATHEMATICS
I am very pleased with the progress that the children
are making in this area. The ABACUS scheme is popular
with the children and well organised and carefully planned
from my point of view. The many games and practical
activities in which the children are involved daily
are providing them with an excellent grounding in the
basic concepts and enabling them to make quick and alert
mental responses. This term we will be looking at -
counting on, counting back and simple addition and subtraction.
We will also be learning about time, length, 3D shape,
2D shape and money.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD
The theme for our first half term is Homes and Gardens.
To introduce the topic we will be concentrating on the
children's own homes and discussing what they look like,
where they are and what they are made of. We will then
move onto other types of homes and think about where
different animals live. Hopefully the weather will be
nice during May and it will allow us to take our learning
out into the garden. We will be studying the plants
and trees around the school and doing some planting
of our own. The children will also take part in hunts
for small insects and observe how they move and what
they look like.
During the second half term our theme is Food. In particular
we will be looking at bread, cereals, fruit, vegetables,
fish, sweet foods and foods from different parts of
the world. The children will be taking part in lots
of cooking activities and learning about the importance
of food hygiene. We will be discussing the children's
favourite foods and finding out how important it is
to have a varied diet.
SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT
We will continue to learn to care for each other and
the environment and to value the things that we have.
Specific R.E. topics will include the stories of The
Good Samaritan, The Lost Sheep, The Farmer and his Seeds,
The Loaves and the Fishes.
AESTHETIC AWARENESS
The children will continue to use a wide range of materials
in lots of different activities including painting,
printing, collage, model making and drawing. We will
be working on many wall displays, which you will be
able to see at the end of term.
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
PE lessons will continue to include dance, gymnastics
and games with small apparatus. The children love playing
with balls and their throwing and catching skills are
greatly improved. As the weather gets better we hope
to spend more of our PE lessons outside where we will
play simple group games and enjoy some athletic activities.
I.C.T.
The computer is ever popular and the children are using
software to work on basic Maths and English skills as
well as improving their keyboard skills. We are very
lucky to have a wide selection of new CDs and the children
will have many opportunities to use them over the term.
We will soon be receiving our new computers and interactive
board which we are all looking forward to.
We are in the last term of a very enjoyable year together
in Reception. The children have all worked really hard
and have matured and developed enormously. Thank you
very much for all your kindness and support which has
made our job this year a very pleasant one.
