Notes:
Can I take this opportunity to welcome all parents/guardians to Year 5. Here is a brief summary of what your child will be learning over this term.
English The class will begin the term by recounting their experiences based in Norfolk. They will learn how to recall events and display them in the form of a diary. Descriptive writing and imagery will be a strong focus this term as well as synonyms and tenses. Following on from this, the children will use a poem as a stimulus to think creatively and write their own versions of poems. Work on verbs will also be implemented into the sessions. Later on we will be focusing on letter writing. This also includes work on word order, character analysis and creation and story structure. A list of spellings with an activity to help children learn them will be sent home every Monday. They will be tested every Monday therefore it is essential that the words are learnt and the activities are carried out.
Mathematics Year 5 will begin the term by revising place-value. Following this, they will learn about multiplication and division which will be continued throughout the year. The children will be tested on their times-tables (up to 10 X 10) every week, therefore it is essential that they practise as often as they can to improve their speed and accuracy. Other topics that will be addressed this term are fractions, decimals, percentages, interpreting data, classifying shapes, plotting co-ordinates, measuring, addition and subtraction and properties of number.
Science The first half of the term will be spent learning about Keeping Healthy. Discussions will take place about the importance of a balanced diet and nutrition. Furthermore, they will be completing a variety of activities to test how the heart operates during various activities and periods of rest. They will also explore the harmful effects of drugs and medicine on the human body. The second part of the term will be spent studying the sizes and shapes of the sun, moon and earth. They will discover how all three bodies move in relation to each other and how they relate to night and day.
I.C.T The class will begin the term by learning to use an object-based graphics package to produce images and visual models. They will learn the key differences between an object-based programme and a paint package and understand that visual models can be used to identify patterns and relationships. The second part of the term will enable children to develop their skills using databases to answer questions.
Humanities In Geography they will begin the term by studying our local area. Following the school journey to Hilltop, they will be able to compare and contrast Sheringham and Whetstone. Leading on from this will be the beginning of the study on the Victorians, which will be carried out through the remainder of the year. The children will be learning about what it was like for children living in Victorian Britain. This will include a great deal of role- play whereby the children will take on the role of children in a Victorian school and I will adopt the role of a Victorian teacher. I assure you that no caning will take place during these sessions!!
Art The class will begin the term by experimenting with water paints to create a landscape picture of their expectations of Norfolk. Furthermore, they will be contributing to the Year 5 Harvest board and designing and making their own Christmas card towards the end of the term. Design and Technology will be approached in the new year..
Religious Education The term will begin by exploring what Christians believe through the words of the Apostles’ Creed. The lessons are also designed to help children to reflect on what they believe. They will be continuing the term with a Christian focus by studying ‘Water of Life’, ‘Fruit of the Spirit’, ‘Challenging the Pharisees’ and ‘The Lord’s Prayer’. We will end the term by analysing some Nativity paintings in preparation for Christmas.
Physical Education Games sessions take place on Thursday afternoons. Year 5 are split into four groups and will alternate every half term, therefore everybody will have the opportunity to develop their skills in Football, Netball/Basketball, Uni-hockey and Rugby. Please ensure that the correct kit is brought to school.
Homework It is expected that children in Year 5 complete a piece of Literacy and a piece on Numeracy homework each week. The homework that will be given will be based upon the work they are doing in class. Homework will be given out on a Monday and will be collected the following Monday. It is vital that the homework is completed and handed in on time. Any incomplete homework will need to be finished during break times.
I hope the children enjoy this term’s activities and work hard to achieve the best that they can.
Please call into Year 5 to see me if you have any queries about your child’s work.
Thank You,
Miss L. Christofi
