Termly Forcast

Here is the termly overview, which will inform you of all the things we will be doing this term. The summer term in the busiest in many ways and probably the most enjoyable for the children what with the Junior Production, Open day and the class trip.

In English we will be doing a lot of work on non-fiction texts and looking in detail at writing that informs recounts and expresses. We will study the characteristics of these types of writing and the purpose. We will also be looking at poetry and adventure and mystery stories. There will be an author study on Dick King-Smith where everyone will have the opportunity to read a title and as a class we will be reading stories by him. We will learn about the author and look at some of the books that he has written.

Reading continues on an individual and group basis, each child will have two library books for you to share with them at home. They will also have a reading book, which I encourage you to work on with your child on a daily basis. It is as important to still listen to you child read regularly especially if they are not the keenest of readers. This helps to keep this valuable and of high interest to your child as they see that they have a captive audience.

As I have mentioned before, every fortnight from now on your child will also have another book which is the one that they will be studying during guided reading on the following week. Please read the pages indicated in the spelling book for that week over the weekend. This is vital for the oncoming weeks work and will enable your child to fully participate during the group session in class. Spellings will continue on a weekly basis, please ensure your child learns them and does the homework that goes with them.

In Maths this half term we will be working on adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers, multiplying and dividing, fractions, time, shape, capacity, position and symmetry. I may send extra sheets home from time to time to help children with work that they have found particularly difficult, I will also send homework on areas that the class have found challenging recently so that they have the chance for consolidation of this work.

In Science this half term we will be learning about light and then next half term we will be moving on to looking at plants and how they grow i.e. the ideal conditions for good growth. They will also learn about how plants provide food for humans and other animals.

In Geography this half term we will be seeing how we can discover the world through the news. We will be looking at how society has changed and how the world has become a global village since the growth of the media, internet, mobile phones, etc. next half term we will be investigating our local area.

History this year is based around invaders and settlers this term's topic is the Vikings. We will be doing a mini-project on them and I would encourage you to help your child find out all they can about them. If you have any books or 'archives' please offer them to your child to bring in to school. Thank you for all your support with this in the last two terms.

In Design and Technology we will be investigating, designing and making our own perfect sandwich snacks so next half term I may be asking children to bring in certain foods that we can use to experiment with in the designing stages or the final making. In Art the children will be learning about the artist Monet, looking at his style of art and imitating using the same techniques, colours, styles and stimulus.

Music this term will focused on basic composition using a range of percussion instruments. The children will also learn about pulse and practise singing in different parts. The class will learn about notation and begin to use a range of basic instruments taking into consideration rhythm and dynamics.

The whole class will continue to learn to play the recorder this term with Miss Clarke and will need a lot of practice and support at home. They are now at the stage where it sounds like they know all there is to know (perhaps!) but I assure you it gets much harder and they need to keep up the hard work to really reap the rewards. It was great to hear them in the class assembly, it could have been the whole class as they have all worked so hard and gained such a high level of playing so quickly.

P.E this term will be on a Thursday and Friday. Thursday's sessions will be Gymnastics this half term and Games next half term. Friday's session will be Hockey or Rugby this half term and move onto Athletics next half term. Please ensure your child has the appropriate kit for each session. Please check you child has all of the kit needed especially white socks and plimsolls that fit!!

In R.E we will be learning about the Jewish religion, the torah and synagogue. We will move on to learn about founders of faith and look at various parables in the bible and what they mean. I would as ever welcome your own experiences and knowledge about any of these so that we can study them more richly in class.

We will have weekly lessons in the ICT lab. This half term we will be continuing learning about e-mail and using the internet to find information, next half term we will be going over what we have learnt about databases; what they are and how to create and manipulate our own. We will be using a programme called Primary Toolkit and will also be going on the Internet. Please be assured that all work on the Internet is closely supervised by myself and will happen within a tight framework of known sites, there will be no exploration at this early stage.

Homework this term will be reading on a daily basis, spellings weekly and Maths or English on alternate weeks. Both of these will be based around the work that we are doing in class. Please encourage your children to work on this independently at home and with your help and guidance when needed.

Both recorders and homework need to be in school on a Thursday every week without fail. It is crucial, this year especially, that the whole class gets into maintaining good habits and working to a time scale. If you have any queries about the homework or how best to help your child with it please do not hesitate to ask. Some children are getting a bit forgetful with their homework, recorders and PE kits and they are not in on the correct days. Please ensure your child has all the things they need for each day so that they can get the most out of a full curriculum

I hope you are all looking forward to the term ahead as much as me! May I take this opportunity to thank you for your support it is very much appreciated, we hope you enjoyed our assembly on the Vikings and would like to thank so many of you for taking the time to attend.

Miss A Brazier
